EPA’s Draft Plan to Study Hydraulic Fracturing


EPA has embarked on a multi-year study to eval­u­ate the envi­ron­men­tal impacts of hydraulic frac­tur­ing, also known as frack­ing. The EPA plans to release an interim report in 2012 and their final report in 2014. Con­gress directed EPA to study the rela­tion­ship between hydraulic frac­tur­ing and drink­ing water, and this study.

University Reviews of Hydraulic Fracturing

A Uni­ver­sity of Texas (UT) research team is per­form­ing a self-funded $300,000 study that is look­ing into the poli­cies and envi­ron­men­tal issues sur­round­ing hydraulic frac­tur­ing. Dur­ing hydraulic frac­tur­ing, a mix­ture com­posed or mostly water that is mixed with sand and chem­i­cals is injected under high pres­sures in the gas pro­duc­ing for­ma­tions. This process cre­ates frac­tures in the for­ma­tion, which allows the recov­ery of more gas.
