How Much Water Is There and Where Is It?


So how much water exists on and above our watery planet? The earth’s sur­face is about 70 per­cent cov­ered with water, and the oceans hold about 96 per­cent of it. Water exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, in ice­caps and glac­i­ers, in the ground as soil mois­ture and aquifers, and even in plant and ani­mals. All of that water would fit into sphere with a diam­e­ter of about 860 miles.

My Life with Water

I have devoted most of my envi­ron­men­tal engi­neer­ing career to water. I design sys­tems that move it from where it is plen­ti­ful to where it is lack­ing. I work on plants that clean the water before we drink it and then treat it again after we are done using it. I even design sys­tems that take the reclaimed water and trans­port it to areas where it is used for irri­ga­tion and man­u­fac­tur­ing. My cus­tomers are water util­i­ties and pri­vate water devel­op­ers. My work life is con­stantly focused on water and yet it never bores me.
